A Technical Writer Ahead of His Time
While working and living in Toronto, Reggie continued trying to find a career that suited him.
One of the directions he explored was Technical Writing at Ryerson. He completed the program and received a diploma. At the time, I had never even heard of technical writing as a profession.
More than a decade later, when I was working in Silicon Valley, I began meeting technical writers. By then, the growth of the computer and software industries had made the ability to explain complicated technical subjects clearly an important skill.
It made me think back to Reggie. Looking at it from that later perspective, I sometimes felt that he had trained for something before the opportunity really existed for him.
Combining Technology and Music
Technical writing wasn’t the only career Reggie explored.
Music had always been one of his great interests, and he later enrolled at the Trebas Institute to study Recording Engineering.
He worked part-time while attending school and successfully completed the program.
Unfortunately, completing the program didn’t lead to a job in the recording industry.
But Reggie didn’t stop looking.
His interests in electronics and technology would eventually lead him in another direction. He moved to Moncton, New Brunswick, and enrolled in the Avionics program at NBCC.
This time, the results would be remarkable.
